Background: Mrs Dufrane contacted her gas company in Feb 2007 to fix her gas contract for one year, due to rising gas prices. However, with gas prices so volatile, when the deal came to an end and her provider's prices shot up, she realised she wanted to move away from this company and secure cheaper gas from another provider.

Mrs Dufrane explains: "I called them and asked to move, saying that I could not afford the price rise – I've got 2 kids and I need every penny I can get! This rise would have meant another "40 a month on my gas bill!

I was told that I could not move as I had signed up for a three year contract. I tried to explain that I was only in a one year deal but they wouldn’t listen; they insisted that I had fixed my gas for two years more (at a higher price) and saying there was nothing I could do about it.

Luckily, back in 2007, before I spoke to them, I found a money saving website that talked about using Record Your Call for recording phone calls about any important contracts or when signing up for anything over the phone. I took this advice and recorded the calls I made when I fixed my gas and electricity.

As soon as this dispute with the gas company began, I downloaded the recording from the Record Your Call website and emailed it to a manager at the gas company. Within 2 hours he called back and apologised for the mix–up, explaining it was down to a computer error and that I could move my gas with immediate effect.

Looking back, I'm so glad that I used the service, and that I was able to prove my innocence and move my gas without delay.

For the cost of a 90p phone call with Record Your Call, I saved possibly 2 years of staying with the same provider and higher monthly costs, and avoided getting into a protracted dispute with the gas company.

Thank you Record Your Call!"
